The Central Valley Project (CVP) is a federal power and water management project in the U.S. state of California under the supervision of the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). Assuming control, the Federal Government initiated its Central Valley Project with plans for two major dams, one at each end of the valley--Friant Dam, completed in 1942 on the San Joaquin north of Fresno, and Shasta (originally known as Kennett Dam) on the Sacramento River, north of Redding. Conceived in the 1930's, the Central Valley Project (CVP) dwarfed all other water infrastructure in California at the time. About 4% of the basin area is urban. Along the way, the CVP encompasses 18 dams and reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 11 million acre-feet , 11 power plants and three fish hatcheries.
